Songs provide a wonderful method of communication in countries that have retained their oral tradition such as Togo and the Gambia. In these 2 countries, they are always sung in local languages. They contain messages of behaviour that leads to good health for the whole community, including the many who are illiterate.

Each community will create its own song to address an issue that is particularly relevant at the time. In Gboto Assigamé in Togo, the women from the Mothers’Club sang this song to welcome us.

“Malaria is a serious disease brought by mosquitoes.
You should sleep under a bednet
We must burry all pieces of broken bottles and old cans
where mosquitoes can breed.
We thank the Global Fund, Mr Blaise, Mr Phil, Mr Jean and the Red Cross ...”

In Nanergou, we were welcomed by the school children who sang this song :

“Malaria, you are our enemy.
I will do all I can to avoid you
Because it is better to prevent than to cure”

... and soon after, all of the Red Cross Volunteers from Nanergou sang :

“When you sleep under a bednet
you never have a headache.
We must cover the jars, refrest the water, wash all the containers
to get rid of all of the breeding sites of the mosquitoes.
If you have no bednet, the mosquitoes will bite you during the night.
And the next day, you will have a headache.
We must clean around our houses
to remove all of the places that are wet and dark
where mosquitoes are comfortable.
When we keep our houses and surrounding clean and tidy,
We will stay healthy.”
